Santa Maria de Montserrat Abbey, Montserrat

#1 of 10 in Things to do in Montserrat
A Benedictine abbey perched on the craggy rock face of Montserrat mountain, Santa Maria de Montserrat Abbey serves as one of Catalonia's most important spiritual sites. Alongside the basilica and monastery, the grounds also feature a sanctuary famous for hosting the image of the patron saint of Catalonia, Our Lady of Montserrat. Featuring grand Gothic and Renaissance architecture, the basilica is a work of art in itself, but also houses a museum with paintings and sculptures from the likes of Picasso, El Greco, and Dali. If you're comfortable with heights, make the trip by cable car for superb views of the mountain and surrounding area. • I visited from Barcelona on a half-day tour. In the free time of about an hour, we didn't see the black Maria statue because of the procession, but the interior was heavy and the atmosphere was good.

  • We took the funicular to the top of the rocky outcrops and then hiked around enjoying the scenery and historical monuments. The walk down was steep but most enjoyable. A long queue outside the Basilli...  more »

  • Tucked away atop an incredible mountain range that stands on it's own is the monastery. This is well worth seeing and though no very big when compared to other European monasteries, it has a personality all of it's own. It is easily accessible by road or public transport which is a great plus. There is an abundance of restaurants, gift shops and other amenities. To me this is quite a spiritual outing. One can even see Barcelona and the see from out there. A very enlightening trip
  • One of the many highlights of Catalonia. The views are breathtakingly stunning and the cable car ride up the 1.4km sheer mountain face, spectacular. If our daughter was a little older, we would have taken a few of the many hikes around the area instead of just the short one above the monastery itself. There are a few artworks by some of the greats in the museum as well as some lesser known artists. The Abbey is OK but the outside mountain views are far superior. Almost every person there seemed to be waiting to view the Black Madonna anyway. Speaking of the Madonna, be prepeared for a long wait! The line was excruciatingly slow considering you get the whole of 30 seconds to view it before being ushered along. In all, Montserrat is one fantastic day out for the whole family. Even more so for the outdoor adventurer. *Tip: Take your own lunch like we did. The food options once your up there are minimal and not very appealing.
