Initially built for gladiatorial combat in the year 8 BCE, lets you explore an amphitheater that once held battles between beasts, men, and the combination of the two. View the stands that had a carrying capacity of 15,000 spectators, and roam around the well-preserved walls that used to house these battles. Declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1993, the site offers a wealth of history. The amphitheater is used for modern performances as well, so plan ahead to combine both visits if you would like to experience the arena in action. But all the photos or videos that can be seen, do not reach the real height of the beauty that has this monument. The truth is that we were impressed, much more than we expected. It is advisable to travel to the city even if only to see it.
Went to see 2Cellos play a concert here last year, it was incredible. Thats one of the things that Spain seems to do well, using old historical sites for modern events so you can really get a feel for what it might have been like in their heyday. Well organized and great views.
The city of Mérida is in itself an impressive Roman site but if time is not on your side at least go see the Roman theater. While it's a bit difficult to navigate if you have small children in strollers it's well worth the effort. Additionally, as a piece of advice, it would be better to see in the early morning or late afternoon when the sun is not at its most potent.
