Alcazaba, Merida

#2 of 7 in Historic Sites in Merida
Alcazaba is the oldest Moorish fortress in Spain, dating back to 835, when Adb ar-Rahman II of Córdoba needed a base from which to command the city after its 805 rebellion. The structure contains even older Roman-Visigothic walls, which Abd ar-Rahman fortified and extended to include 25 lookout towers. He also fortified the Roman reservoir, which filtered water from the Guadiana River to sustain the city during sieges. Descend the steps to the reservoir where you can see this ancient architectural feature while escaping the sun. The building is accessible from the ancient Roman Bridge over the Guadiana--this entrance was historically used to control movement of people and goods into the city. If you're planning to visit other historic monuments in the city, take advantage of the pass that allows visits to multiple sites. • The site is well preserved. Its evolution throughout history has been appreciated since Roman construction, Visigothic reforms and Arab contributions. It is noteworthy the cistern.

  • It's worth a visit. It's surprising to find him when you're on the street for Merida. It's pretty well preserved. Without the need for a guide it has signs indicative of everything you are seeing. Free.

  • Easy walking distance of other Roman ruins. Plenty of information boards outlining the history, in several languages. You can climb on the west upper wall for a good views of the Roman bridge and Alcazaba.
  • The fortification wall is nice. Most interesting is the history about it. The lower part is from the Roman's and the upper part from the Moors. But given that there are many other sites in Merida, I would not spend much time there.
