La Pedriza, Manzanares el Real

#8 of 18 in Wildlife in Community of Madrid
La Pedriza is a geological feature on the southern slopes of the Guadarrama mountain range of great scenic and leisure interest. Access is from Manzanares el Real, a municipality in the northwest of the Community of Madrid (Spain). Geological forces have created a remarkable boulder field of strangely eroded granitic outcrops, and nearly a thousand rock climbing routes of all difficulties are available to rock climbers. Hiking is also popular in La Pedriza, especially on weekends. It is one of the largest granitic ranges of Europe and holds numerous peaks, rocky cliffs, streams and meadows. The 32 square kilometres occupied by La Pedriza lies within the Regional Park of the high river basin of Manzanares, the largest park of the Community of Madrid. In this zone, vegetation is sparse, but there are Mediterranean shrubs like the rockrose, and alpine varieties like fabaceaes. The fauna is rich in birds of prey; the breeding colony of over 100 pairs of griffon vultures is the largest in the Madrid area. This natural area has been the scene of some movie shootings such as El Cid, The Fall of the Roman Empire, or Conan the Barbarian.

  • It is always a good thing to go one day to the Pedriza excursion, to walk, to hiking, to eat, to snack... or spend the day... a beautiful, quiet and ideal place to be in nature, very close to Madrid, to disconnect.

  • Great place for a hiking daytrip from Madrid. However the signs are not good enough without a map so make sure you have one or pack a gps. Phones will have no coverage when you get a little bit further away from the carpark.
  • A great area in the North of Madrid for trekking, bouldering and sport climbing. It's possible to go there with public transportations from plaza de castilla. There are more than 3000 boulders and some lead climbing routes. They're all shown in the guidebook with adress and grade. The type of the stone is granite.
