Take a few moments out of your tour of the city to rest at Parque del Retiro, noted for its marble monuments, elegant buildings, abundant greenery, and landscaped lawns. Laid out in the 17th century, the park was originally meant to be a secluded space for kings and queens. Opened to the public in 1868, this site is an ideal place for a leisurely stroll, relaxing picnic, or an entertaining boat ride around the artificial lake, the focal point of the park. Art exhibitions and live music performances are frequently held here on the weekends, drawing hundreds of curious visitors from around the country. If you prefer a bit of peace and quiet, you can always find a lush secret corner far away from the noisy crowds. You can walk, rest, bike, stop to attend a concert, go by boat, visit the crystal palace, children's games, bars, and lots of greenery and fountains
Beautifully kept gardens and a great variety of things to see and do: scads of turtles in Crystal Palace pond, cats kept and cared for on park grounds (for rodent control?), birds all around, free Velasquez Palace exhibits (air conditioned), many good street performers, boating and pedaling/blading activities of all kinds, wonderful fountains and sculptures/statues. Places to eat in park offer surprising variety - usual ice cream & cold drinks all the way to tapas and paellas. Big enough to spend a whole afternoon, but not so huge you can't see it all if you're willing to walk a bit.
Overall verdict: Great park with a wonderful lake. Price: Free admission. Crowd: The place is extremely spacious and full of shade. No need to worry about crowds. Entertainment value: Beautiful park. Great place to relax. For 6€, I would recommend renting a boat for 45 minutes to row around the lake. It is a fun experience!
