Monasterio de las Descalzas Reales, Madrid

#15 of 94 in Museums in Madrid
A working royal monastery set in the former palace of King Charles I and Isabel of Portugal, Monasterio de las Descalzas Reales was founded by the royal couple’s daughter in 1559. Luxuriously decorated and filled with high-value objects, the monastery can only be seen via a guided tour. This grandeur was funded by the dowries of the widow and spinster noblewomen that came to the convent in the 16th and 17th centuries. Admire the masterpiece paintings, huge tapestries, ornate alters, grand sculptures, and significant religious relics. Book in advance as tours have limited capacity. • After a long time trying to enter, there was finally a gap and I was able to enter (it is also true that tickets can be obtained in advance by the National Heritage website). In the convent there is real religious life and for this reason the visits are always guided. In my case the guide made a correct explanation, but I don't think he knew how to convey the great importance of this artistic ensemble. I think the best is at the beginning of the tour (impressive paintings on the staircase), and in the area of the huge tapestries. By the way, the sisters often enjoy it!!!

  • The monastery can be visited only in groups. The guide who accompanied us spoke in Spanish but she did often a summary in English ( because only 5 persons were speaking English from the group ). What ...  more »

  • The art and tapestries here were extraordinary. The sheer amount of Renaissance art here is unbelievable. Even though the hours and tour are limited, I would recommend this place if you are in Madrid.
  • They only provide guided tours in French and Spanish but no English. The place is worth visiting but we learn just a little because of the language barrier. It was a pity.
