La Basilica De San Isidoro De Leon, Leon

4.6
La Basilica De San Isidoro De Leon dates back a millenium, although it has been rebuilt since then. Within the church is a pantheon serving as the burial place to some dozens of members of Spanish royalty from centuries past. Be sure to look up at the ceiling frescos in this royal tomb. Relics from Saint John the Baptist and Saint Pelayo are on display, as well as the remains of San Isidoro. The museum is sure to interest history buffs, with medieval ivories, fabrics, and codices, as well as a Visigothic Bible. Look up at the facade to see a statue of Saint James the Moor Slayer mounted on horseback. • Good organization, you have to book previously on the web, visits organized with guides, there are guides in other languages, impressive polychromies in your crypt

  • I repeat the lousy title. Because we paid a visit to the Museum of San Isidoro for several recommendations and yet our disappointment was total. First ly no where the building is in a position to be visited (not at least charging). They were construction, all dirty and full of dust, it was 20.30 in the afternoon and there were areas where we were going in the dark... a waste. Second, because the guide who paid us the visit, was a real unpresentable. She couldn't speak, or focus, we asked her several times to go slowly and there was no way to understand her. We also found him an absolutely disrespectful and incapable person to work in a place as such. And third, because we couldn't savor the visit. They push you at full speed through the rooms, with no chance of stopping or at least asking questions. The explanation is superficial. From my point of view, it is unfeasible to condense all the content in 1 hour. They should rethink making longer visits, probably with less than 2 hours impossible. Of course, I won't be the one to recommend this site

  • Gorgeous Basilika, Romananic Style, large Dimensions for the period. Beautiful very basically decorated, giving room to admire construction and ample masonry. Lovely Place in Front and recommendable Hotel in the back of the Basilika. Touristically a 1in a Million Ensemble
  • Interesting artifacts. Can only enter with guided tour. There were no English tours on the day we visited, so we did a Spanish tour despite not understanding much. Worth it to see Romanesque Pantheon and chalice.
