La Rabida Monastery, Huelva

4.3
Owned by the Franciscans since the 13th century, La Rabida Monastery was declared a Spanish national monument in 1856. The buildings at the site were constructed in the late 14th and early 15th centuries, as evidenced by the Gothic and Moorish Revival architecture popular during those periods. Christopher Columbus stayed at the friary for two years after his first request to sail to the Indies was denied. With the help of the friars, he was able to submit his proposal to Queen Isabel a second time. Visit the on-site museum full of relics from the New World and the discovery of America, as well as a cloister and reception room, all in pristine condition because they are still in use today. • We went on holiday to Ayamonte and back we passed the Monastery... the truth without waiting long... but we were impressed by the whole, for it is not only the monastery but the gardens, and I would say a whole complex. Inside the monastery there are guided tours and you can also enter on your own reading the explanations. Very well structured and something "magical" if you realize everything that happened in this place and that led to a big change in the world of that time. It is very well preserved 5/5, well structured explanations 5/5, toilets in the outside of the monastery, large parking (300 meters approx) and good place for a few photos 5/5. An unforgettable experience. Eye that here you will not find the ships, that port itself no longer exists because of the change in the rivers... to go to see the ships you have to travel a few kms by car (10 mins from what we were told).

  • What a beautiful monastery. In Peace you walk through the spaces and you can enjoy the story of the preparation by Columbus. Also the view and the surrounded garden is of high class. The yard and port with the replicas of the the three ships turned out to be a bit less interssant, nice to walk through, great to visit with children.

  • Interesting and a well worth a visit but being given 3 headsets among 4 of us with the assumption that our 11 year old daughter wouldn't need one is pretty rubbish. It costs nothing and there were only two families visiting at the time. Hence only 2 stars.
  • An interesting add-on to the tour of the Columbus Museum in Huelva. Very well presented and the tour offers telephone commentaries in the language of your choice. All exhibits and rooms are numbered so that you can pick whichever commentary you wish to listen to, one at a time, in any order that you wish, i.e. you do not necessarily have to tour the monastery in a set order so you can by-pass any tour groups if you wish.
