Pico de las Nieves, Gran Canaria

4.7
Pico de las Nieves is the highest peak of the island of Gran Canaria, Canary Islands, Spain. Its height is 1949m above sea level. The origin is volcanic (stratovolcano). On its slopes, Canary Islands Pine was reintroduced in the 1950s. It is the highest elevation of the province of Las Palmas and the third highest mountain in the Canary Islands. Of the other Canary Islands, only Tenerife and La Palma have higher peaks.
The name means 'peak of the snows' in Spanish and refers to the fact that several covered pits (neveras in Spanish) for holding snow were built directly into the mountainsides. (An alternative theory states that the name came about as the mountain had the highest frequency of snowfalls on the island.) The first of the neveras was constructed in 1694 by order of the Catholic Church. The snow was collected by laborers using wooden shovels and wicker baskets, making real mountains of snow. The snow was placed into the pits by the "paleros" in rows, and packed in rectangular boxes of wood or cork separated by layers of straw.
There were many blocks of ice, called "sabanada", which in June would be carried in panniers of straw covered with blankets to the ice cream shop in the Cathedral of Las Palmas (the capital of the island) on horseback, which took five or six hours. The snow was used for alleviating disease, to lower the temperature in the epidemics of yellow fever and cholera, as well as an anti-inflammatory and analgesic. It was also used for cooling water or beverages for the upper class. Water from the pools was used for irrigation purposes.

  • There's a hiking trail, but it's also accessible by car (with a car parking at the top). Really worth to visit - even if lower parts of the island are below clouds as the view can surprise you  more »
  • Today we were in the mountains and of course we didn't want to miss the view from the Pico de las Nieves. The ride to the mountain was quite relaxed our car ( Citroen C3 ) was totally underpowered for it. We often had to switch down from the second in the first gear. Here I recommend a car with a bit more power under the hood. The roads were in surprisingly good condition and had almost all guardrails to secure. Arriving at the top, the view was truly stunning. Disturbing is the food truck. Not the truck itself, but the really disruptive power generator. The temperature on the viewing platform was a pleasant 26 degrees.

  • such an amazing view over here. The roads tho.. Prepare for some holy turns..
  • Stunning few above the clouds. I got lucky with clear weather that enabled me to see down as well. Later on clouds surrended the mountain and blocked the most of view. Would love to have chance to spend more time over there hiking and discover surroundings. To go up there I used rental car and I found it quite challenging to drive up there. Average speed was around 20 kmh and barely touched the 3rd gear. Watch out for big cars when going up and down.
