Museo & Parque Arqueologico Cueva Pintada
Undiscovered on the island of Gran Canaria until the mid-19th century, Museo & Parque Arqueologico Cueva Pintada serves as a window into the pre-Hispanic past of the Canary Islands. Explore the site’s six caves, which contain cave paintings and colorful designs created by the original inhabitants of the island, who experts believe arrived from North Africa some 2,500 years ago. Wander the walkways surrounding the indigenous village, itself believed to date from the 6th century, and imagine life here in the distant past. Enrich your knowledge of the area through the Archeological Museum, which displays artifacts from the site and information on its history, and charts the human colonization of the islands. Guided tours are available from the visitors’ center, and are included in the ticket prices. Keep in mind, however, that photography is not allowed inside. A real treasure of how early inhabitants lived on this island. An archaeologists dream. This site was covered up by many metres of earth in time and forgotten. Later the area was used as a banana plantation before it was discovered. Recommended guided tour. The excavation is covered and large enough to impress. Wheelchair access, with ramps and lifts. Highlight is the wall painting. Ceramics and artefacts provoke many questions.
