One of the best wind and kitesurfing locales in the world, the waters of Playa El Medano are always decorated with sails. Watch them cut across the waves from one of the many cafes or restaurants in the town's main square, also a spot known for local fiestas. Between the town's two beaches is La Montaña Roja (The Red Mountain), a protected natural reserve with unusual volcanic origins. Around the base of the mountain, enjoy a walk or hike to see where indigenous plant life take advantage of the mineral-rich soil. Explore the many side streets of the old neighborhoods, then seek out a small cave that is near the edge of town. Hermano Pedro once used this cave for prayer and reflection; a small shrine has been placed inside to pay homage to the saint. Very nice beach. Black and yellow, with fine sand. Surfers, very little windy, as best as you wish. Restaurants with tapas and local food at good prices. Paella, seafood, drinks and one and only Sangria. I will return with my friends. Perhaps I will buy something here. It is awesome.

We traveled all over the island and visited a bunch of beaches in our week stay and we really liked El Madena and its little boardwalk beachfront and town. Such a fun place to hang out at with great little cafes and shops and tons of people windsurfing or running along the beach. The beach always has something happening on it that makes it interesting and lively. The atmosphere is wonderful and also a great little place to lay out in the sun if you sit in one of the little inlets on the beach so the wind doesn't hit you.
