Monasterio de San Jeronimo de Yuste, Cuacos de Yuste

A monastery that once housed reclusive royalty, the contemporary Monasterio de San Jeronimo de Yuste hosts eco-tourists on its grounds and houses the Pauline order of monks. Emperor Charles V chose this out-of-the-way location to spend the end of his days in prayer and seclusion, along with about 60 members of his personal entourage. A fire destroyed Charles’ monastery during the Peninsular War, but Francisco Franco had it restored to its original state in 1949. Tour the emperor's refurbished rooms looking out over groves of cherry trees. The Valle del Jerte, where the attraction is located, is laced with hiking trails. • Well. For historical interest, to be seen, there's not much. Wednesday and Thursday from 15:00 to 17:00 is free, although you can visit until 18:00
