Set in Spain’s oldest national park amongst mountains and green meadows lies Lake Covadonga, which is in fact two lakes. The first is Lake Enol, 1,070 m (3,510 ft) above sea level. Walk around the lake and look for free-roaming cows. Then set off to Lake Ercina, 1,108 m (3,635 ft) above sea level. Ambitious walkers can explore further from here, accessing more remote areas of the park. Refuel and rest weary legs in the cafe at this lake. Cars are not permitted to drive up to the lakes in the height of the tourist season, but a bus is available. Outside of tourist season, nervous drivers should opt for a tour bus or taxi, as the road is very winding and can get misty. We approach the Cangas bus station and buy 2 tickets for adults and 2 for children, 25 euros, with tickets we have the right to ride until 20:30 as many times as we want... We climbed at 10:15 we arrive at the lakes 45 minutes later, awesome as drivers drive. The perfect roads, facilities and staff even despite the number of people, as we go down 13:30 we stopped at Covadonga to see it, 15:00 again in Cangas. A great morning.
