Trip Planner: Europe / Spain / Extremadura / Province of Caceres / Caceres / Royal Monastery of Santa María de Guadalupe
Discover four centuries of Spanish religious architecture spread throughout Royal Monastery of Santa María de Guadalupe, home to the famous statue of the Black Madonna and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Admire the Mudéjar cloister, built between 1389 and 1405, decorated in the traditional white and red. Marvel at the opulently ornamented sacristy and study the series of Zurbarán paintings on the walls. Scheduled tours grant access to more areas of the monastery and enable you to get a closer look at the Black Madonna. I don't like this format, but at least the professional that. touched us, made it nice, fast. He offered the right data with ease and guiding (even grazing) the group. It is worth visiting Guadeloupe to stroll through its streets and visit this sacred temple. 'll!

The lockers open at 9:30 and at that time we thought that possibly other people would do the same and there would be a visit first thing. We were indeed a few of us who were. The first surprise came when the taquillero told us that it was impossible for there to be anything before 10 o'm because that was the time when the guides arrived. Why do they announce 9:30 for as the opening time? We had to go for a walk and when we came back at 10 the guide told us that the first visit would be at 10:45 because then it was planned that a group came from Trujillo and that before there would be none (??). To make time again. When the group finally arrived, there were too many of us who came in only the ones we had been waiting for before and quoted the people in the group for later. In short, more than an hour dizzying the partridge from the nefarious organization. A total disaster. When we finally did the tour, the monastery is barely visited. Only sacristy and some of the treasures (liturgical ornaments, ancient religious books, paintings, ...) found in three rooms next to the cloister are taught. In fact, even the church is not part of the visit (and it wouldn't be too bad to include it). I thought it was a bit of a joust. Despite all this, the complex is awesome, both on the outside and what we could see inside.
Have not been inside but the building looks fantastic from outside and above. The roof line is a mix of towers and spires, some with majolica tiles and all looks in a good state of repair. Many visitors today, Saturday, with the plaza in front closed to traffic and a friendly atmosphere from the bars and restaurants around the plaza.
Beautiful building, very interesting museum displays and lovely to see the Guadalupe Virgin relic up close. Well recommended.
