  • Very close to the Cathedral of Burgos, on a high that places us in Fernán González street, we visualize the discrete walls of a church. When we cross his threshold, beauty explodes. The current building stands on an old Romanesque-style church and the one that has reached our day began to be built in the early fifteenth century. Its austere architecture stands out the southern cover, which overlooks the Cathedral. But inside it stands out, above all, the monumental main altarpiece made of limestone. This work is considered to be the first sculptural work by Francisco de Colonia, commissioned by Don Gonzalo de Polanco, patron of the church, in whose design Simon of Cologne, his father, was able to intervene. It is a very particular ensemble to be carved in stone and be of the altarpiece-tomb type, composed of many images and scenes forming a curious composition. In the center, in the lower area, we have a conopial arch that houses three bodies with reliefs from the life of St. Nicholas, whose effigy of bulk appears solemn. In the second body, we see a pictorial composition that is made in the form of a disc, called tondo, surrounded by angels, with the coronation of Mary. The sculptures, despite having Gothic forms, are full of narrative life and described in a very precise way. It was originally gilded and polychrome, but unfortunately some of its original appearance has been lost. And around its walls we find tombs and boards that are well worth a visit.

  • Located next to the cathedral, this church is worth a visit. Its altarpiece is exceptional, an explanatory sheet is also provided at the entrance. The structure of the church is also interesting with its arch. It's a must-see.
