Basilica of Begona, Bilbao

#4 of 15 in Historic Sites in Bilbao
The nickname of Basilica of Begona is "La Salve," or "salute," because the steeple was the first thing sailors on the Nervión River saw when returning from sea. The basilica is open to the public until early evening, with the exception of the siesta hours in the late afternoon. This holy place is particularly festive during the major religious festivals on the 15th of August and the 11th of October, when locals and visitors make pilgrimages and attend midnight mass. • reachable by a long staircase of about 200 steps. the basilica is very impressive. beautiful wooden floor in "ascent" that follows the shape of the ground. from here you can enjoy a great view from the top of the city.

  • For me a real CATEDRAL, in Bilbao, I have loved the respect that is in the TEMPLE of Begoña and the ground has caused me surprise that you go as you go up towards the High Altar, like climbing a slope.
