#4 of 15 in Historic Sites in Bilbao
Church · Hidden Gem · Tourist Spot
The nickname of Basilica of Begona is "La Salve," or "salute," because the steeple was the first thing sailors on the Nervión River saw when returning from sea. The basilica is open to the public until early evening, with the exception of the siesta hours in the late afternoon. This holy place is particularly festive during the major religious festivals on the 15th of August and the 11th of October, when locals and visitors make pilgrimages and attend midnight mass.
