Trip Planner: Europe / Spain / Catalonia / Province of Barcelona / Barcelona / Casa Mila - La Pedrera
To see one of architect Antoni Gaudí’s most controversial designs, visit Casa Mila - La Pedrera, known for its undulating stone facade and the wrought-iron decorations on its balconies and windows. Declared a World Heritage Site in 1984, the building features some of the most innovative elements of its time, including underground parking. Perhaps the most remarkable element of the building is the roof, which features enormous chimneys designed to look like medieval knights. The architect’s elaborate plans for the roof included adding a huge statue of the Virgin, but when the businessman who commissioned the building said no, Gaudí resigned from the project. Today, the roof is frequently the site of music performances. Check online for an accurate schedule of special events and available tours. Casa Mila - La Pedrera reviews
Even our grumpiest teen liked this visit - the house is that remarkable and the museum has prepared an array of striking physical and video exhibits. more »
Way too expensive for what they offer. Was very unimpressed. You can walk through the building fairly quickly with the audio guide. It's a bit interesting but they price is out of line. more »
Very beautiful architectural piece, a must visit while in Barcelona! It is wheelchair friendly (and the person accompanying the person in the wheelchair enters for free), however be aware that there is only a very small platform on the terrace (the most beautiful part of the visit in my opinion) that can be accessed in a wheelchair - everything else is just stairs. Still totally recommend checking it out because it is unique.
The location does require a entrance fee of 25 euros for an adult, however if you love architecture, it is completely worth the price! The design of the rooftop, to the attic, and to the apartments is impressive. There was a lot of thought and influences of nature that shine through the construction. One of the aspects that I enjoyed the most were the door handles that were designed. They not only looked awesome, it had a very specific design intent for looks and ergonomics. There are also many differently spots for great pictures and for anyone to practice taking pictures.
