Basilica de San Vicente, Avila

#4 of 47 in Things to do in Avila
Historic Site · Hidden Gem · Architectural Building
Just outside the walls of Avila, Basilica de San Vicente is a 12th-century Romanesque church with notable Gothic architecture. The basilica sits on the site where three Christian martyrs were killed after their refusal to worship pagan gods. Don’t miss the intricate cloisters along the side of the church and the altar. The stones used in the interior are eye-catching, marked with a red coloration that comes from iron. Be sure to see the tomb of Saint Vincent, which is sculpted to depict the story of his torture and execution.
