Exceptionally well-preserved and diverse remains of fossil fauna define West Coast Fossil Park. Some fossils date back to 5.2 million years. Bones of 200 different animal species can be found at this site which was discovered during phosphate mining operations in 1993. The park offers fossil tours and gives you an opportunity to take part in the excavations. Compare the skeleton of an extinct African bear to a human or that of a sivathere--a short-necked long-horned giraffe--or, examine a skull of an extinct sabre-toothed cat. • Great experience and beautifully presented We were invited by friends to visit with family. Last Time visited was about 10 years and wow, what a pleasant surprise at the new setup. Chalk and cheese is an understatement, a complete makeover for the better. Well worth a visit to see how art is used to depict the past. The tour guide was enthusiastic and informative. We were fortunate to meet the park manager. Pippa and she added insights which was appreciated. The food was acceptable and the coffee was great. Have planned to take my twenty year old kids to see this new wonder a decade later. Well worth the visit
  • This is a great place to visit and is suitable for children, adults and especially school groups. The park is pet friendly, wheelchair accessible and easy to locate. Aside from this, they have active dig-sites, informative guided tours, a lovely restaurant and the venue is great for special events. I highly recommend spending about 3 hours or more to truly enjoy this place. Bookings aren't necessary except maybe during peak holiday seasons and for large groups.
