West Coast Fossil Park, Vredenburg

Exceptionally well-preserved and diverse remains of fossil fauna define West Coast Fossil Park. Some fossils date back to 5.2 million years. Bones of 200 different animal species can be found at this site which was discovered during phosphate mining operations in 1993. The park offers fossil tours and gives you an opportunity to take part in the excavations. Compare the skeleton of an extinct African bear to a human or that of a sivathere--a short-necked long-horned giraffe--or, examine a skull of an extinct sabre-toothed cat.
