Maclear's Beacon, Table Mountain National Park

4.6
Marking the highest point on Table Mountain, Maclear's Beacon offers sweeping views of Cape Town and its surroundings. The beacon was originally built in 1865 as a triangulation station and is still used by cartographers today. The hike up via the Skelton Gorge route is an adventure in its own right, while walking up from the Upper Cable Car Station is much easier. In any case, you will get to enjoy the views, so be sure to bring your camera. Maclear's Beacon is just one of the many highlights you can arrange to see using our custom trip planner, Cape Town Edition.

  • On Table Mountain Plateau there is a great hiking trail to Maclear's Beacon. You can reach the highest point in about 40 minutes from the mountain station. You should take the time to enjoy the scenery and the views away from the crowds!

  • Once you've made the way to Maclear's Beacon, you're certainly no longer trapped in the crowds of tourists. You can easily find wonderful silence and a perfect panoramic view of the back of the Table Mountain Chair. Take time and enough water with you. Then this hike becomes an experience.

  • We did a 3 hour hike around the top of the table mountain with our guide for the day Tim Lundy. He was very knowledgeable and able to point out various features, plants, wildlife etc that we would never have known about. If you have the time, then do more than just go up in the cable car and walk around the small area at the top and return. There are some great walks up there which you can take, but do be prepared because the weather can change rapidly or use a guide like Tim who I would not hesitate to recommend. Just one thing, we ended up in a queue for tickets for the cable car for 2 hours. So get your tickets in advance and if you do have to queue, then get one of your party to get the tickets whilst the rest of the party wait in the queue.
  • Nearly no other people there. I walked there barefoot. Incredible experience. Also I found a place with carpenter bees, Bumblebees and a black Salamander, so watch your step.
