#2 of 8 in Wildlife in Stellenbosch
Hike through Jonkershoek Nature Reserve, a World Heritage Site and the origin of four scenic rivers. Set within a timber plantation in the majestic, rugged Jonkershoek Mountains, the reserve spans some 10,000 ha (27,000 ac), cut by the Eerste River’s course through the Jonkershoek Valley. See some fairytale waterfalls in lush greenery consisting of over 1,100 plant species, tour the park by bike, or visit a historic farmstead built in 1790. The reserve's diverse wildlife includes mammals like leopards, caracals, Klipspringers, baboons, and mongooses, as well as reptiles, such as berg and puff adders, boomslangs, and Cape cobras. Keep an eye out for birds, such as kingfishers, eagles, spotted eagle owls, sugar birds, and orange-breasted sunbirds. • We hiked to the second waterfall. It was stunning, the water cascaded down the cliff and the sheer length of the drop made me feel insignificant. Just a disclaimer, it rained a lot the previous day, the waterfall is not normally as big as on the photos. And also, hiking to the second waterfall is quite a challenge because there is 2 spots where you have to climb up the sides to get up and around a waterfall. There is enough footholds on the rocks to comfortably do this but if you are scared of heights then it may be a challenge!
  • Brilliant and safe for mountain biking. There is a lot of single track. A yearly permit is a better option. It reduces the price significantly.
