Explore the history of the City of Diamonds at McGregor Museum, a multidisciplinary establishment set in the former Kimberley Sanatorium. Old uniforms and artifacts carried by diamond miners are part of an eclectic display in the spacious heritage building. Established in 1907 in honor of a former mayor and diamond pioneer, the museum hosts a research center for the natural and cultural history of the region with a collection of photographs and period rooms. Examine a restored habitat of early cave dwellers, as well as rock art, ancient tools, and hand axes. Learn about Africa's first mines in Swaziland (established 110,000 years ago), the conflict over minerals among Europeans, and the consequences of the Anglo-Boer Wars. • The museum is beautiful. The gentleman at the front is kind and eager to help if you're lost in any part of the museum or would like extra information. Great, well preserved exhibits. There's a small fee to pay but it's worth it. Family and school friendly.
  • The museum would have been a nice addition for our kids to our visit through Kimberley. History is important but the lack of card facilities was a bit to historic for me. Add to that rude employees with bad attitudes failing to adhere to the advertised closing times had us turning at the door.
