The river cascades across huge slabs of rock at Hartbeespoort Dam, an arch-type dam surrounded by the Magaliesberg mountain range. A popular weekend getaway, this dam cradled in the lap of the mountains was once gaming area for the hartebeest after which it was named. With a yacht club operating on the lake since the construction of the dam in 1923, the area offers a wide range of water sports. You can also hike here. Because of all the tourism, you'll find plenty of restaurants and local crafts here.
