Kopčany is a village in western Slovakia, close to the borders with the Czech Republic.HistoryIn historical records Kopčany (German: Koptschan, Hungarian: Kopcsány) was first mentioned in 1392. However, the village is much older. In the 9th century, Kopčany was part of the agglomeration of Mikulčice, an important center and plausibly the capital of Great Moravia. Besides, Kopčany was the native community (according to one of the legends even the birth-place) of Tomáš Garrigue Masaryk, the first President of Czechoslovakia.GeographyThe municipality lies at an altitude of 160 metres and covers an area of 21.829 km². It is part of the Skalica District in the Trnava Region.DemographicsKopčany has a population of about 2,584 people.Genealogical resourcesThe records for genealogical research are available at the state archive "Statny Archiv in Bratislava, Slovakia" Roman Catholic church records (births/marriages/deaths): 1678-1910 (parish A) Lutheran church records (births/marriages/deaths): 1786-1895 (parish B)
