Grassalkovich Palota, Bratislava

3.4
Once a residence of some of Slovakia's wealthy nobles, Grassalkovich Palota today serves as the home of Slovakia's president. You can view the 18th-century palace's exterior, noting its similarity in terms of design to many other famous European summer palaces of the era. Admire the residence's ornate decorations and style, which combines both Baroque and Rococo architecture. Because the palace serves as an important government facility, it does not open its doors to the public. Be sure to catch the daily changing of the guard ritual, if possible, or go for a stroll in the public gardens surrounding the palace. • The presidential palace is the official residence of the President of Slovakia. When I visited in October, the whole facade was covered and there was little to see. So I can only rate it like I see it...  more »
  • Official state residence of the President of the Republic of Slovakia since 30 September 1996, after a complete renovation, which began in 1990, following the Velvet Revolution of 1989. Built in 1760 for Count Anton Grassalkovich, president of the Hungarian royal chamber, this palace is of late Baroque and Rococo style, and has a beautiful French garden, which is dotted with small fountains and statues. The palace is not visited, unlike the garden which is free of access. The presidential palace is guarded by guards in blue uniforms. In front of the Palace, a fountain was erected, a symbol of peace and brotherhood between peoples and a globe inlaid with doves against a background of flags in the colors of the country.
