Skull Tower, Nis

4.0
#2 of 47 in Historic Sites in Central Serbia
Ruin · Tourist Spot
Standing 4 m (13 ft), Skull Tower features human skulls built into a wall. As the 1809 Battle of Čegar was coming to an imminent end for the grossly outnumbered Serbian army, the commander Stevan Sinđelić shot at a magazine of gun powder, killing the remaining soldiers from both sides. To commorate the victory, the Ottoman leader ordered decapitation of all 952 fallen Serbian soldiers. The heads were skinned, stuffed, and built into a wall. Today, you can see the construction in a museum building. Only 54 skulls remain, as many were stolen and buried by family members, and others have been destroyed over time. If you wish to hear the entire story, seek out a guide at the site. For travelers who use our online itinerary creator, Nis holidays become easier to arrange, with trips to the Skull Tower and other attractions mapped out and timetabled.

  • This symbol of independence is a Nice place to visit. Although it may seem spooky the backstory behind it is very intriguing. There are guides there that explain this story. It is a shame that most skulls were stolen, but nevertheless a very interesting monument.
  • Interesting place with interesting history. Most skulls were removed through the years, but enough are left so that you can imagine how the tower looked like with almost 1000 skulls of the rebel fighters. There is a small museum next to the tower that provides details about the event.
