Smolny Cathedral, St. Petersburg

4.6
Smolny Cathedral, once the centerpiece of a convent founded to educate young aristocrats, now serves as a concert and exhibit hall. Italian architect Francesco Bartolomeo Rastrelli designed this blue and white building by combining Baroque details with the forest of towers and onion domes typical of an old Russian monastery. Climb to the top of one of the two 63 m (207 ft) bell towers for views of the city. The building features an austere, white, neoclassical interior, notable only for its fine acoustics beneath the central dome. If you are lucky, you may catch a concert rehearsal during your visit. • I loved the blue and white and exterior. Just before sunset in summer the front faces directly west which is great for photography. The interior is all white and not busy with many icons (compared to ...  more »
  • Historically, the Cathedral is the temple of educational institutions of St. Petersburg. The combination of blue walls and white stone molding gives the monastery a festive and picturesque, gorgeous openwork fence of the temple - it is beautiful comprehensively. The cathedral has an amazing optical illusion: as it approaches it begins to seem that its building at 93.7 meters height gradually decreases, although everything should look the other way around.

  • The temple is still under major reparations, but still worthy to enjoy the amazing architecture! There's a lovely park all around the main temple, formed by the monastery around it in a U form. There's also a tour to the clock tower just for 150rubles which gives an amazing view of the historic center of the city.
  • Truly a "wow" from afar and inside. Probably one of the most beautiful cathedrals I have seen with the calm blue exterior and the "pure" white ( and some gold) interior. The Cathedral was founded in 1748 by the empress Elizabeth Petrovna and was consecrated on July 20, 1835. There are scheduled visits to the belfry. Around the main cathedral are several other buildings that also served as a girls school. Definitely worth a visit.
