Trip Planner: Europe / Russia / Northwestern District / St. Petersburg / Peter and Paul Fortress (Petropavlovskaya Krepost)
The first structure ever built in Saint Petersburg, Peter and Paul Fortress (Petropavlovskaya Krepost) serves as the final resting place of all Russian monarchs from Peter the Great to Alexander III. Constructed in 1703, the fortress takes up the better part of a small island in the river Neva. Designed to repel possible attacks by the Swedish navy, the massive structure never served its intended purpose, eventually becoming a notorious political prison. The most notable feature of this complex is its cathedral, boasting a gilded cupola and a bell tower that dominates the skyline from a height of over 120 m (400 ft). The fortress also houses a museum dedicated to the history of the city. The idea was to protect the region from the attacks of Sweden. It was the fortress that originated the city of St. Petersburg that would later be the capital of the Empire. In the center of the fortress is the magnificent cathedral of St. Peter and St. Paul that contains the remains of all Russian Sovereans, after Peter the Great, in particular the Romanov family.

There everything will be paid except the entrance of the fortress but the wandering remains pleasant between the Cathedral, the burial of the great Dukes, House of the engineers, the gates Saint Peter and the Neva back in interesting Metro.
Pretty touristy but still worth the visit. There is a combination pass that gets you into all the major attractions just not the smaller museums. The jail museum was pretty fascinating and very informative. There were signs in English as well. Bring a jacket if it's chilly to walk atop The fortress
Definitely a place you should check out while you are in town. Entrance to the grounds is free, but to go inside any of the museums, you need to pay. You can get these tickets by the main entrance or at most of the attractions individually.
