New Jerusalem Monastery of Resurrection, Istra

Must see · Religious Site · Tourist Spot
Take a short trip away from the bustling center of the city to visit New Jerusalem Monastery of Resurrection, a site that holds a special place in the history of the Russian Orthodox Church. The monastery dates back to the 17th century when Patriarch Nikon built it as a residence. He deliberately chose the location that reminded him of the Holy Land and made sure the design mimicked the Church of the Holy Sepulcher in Jerusalem. The monastery had a turbulent history, from ransacking during World War II to closing down under the communist regime, but today it again functions as a spiritual community. The monastery's surroundings give you the freedom to admire the architecture and religious art. Admission is free. Our Istra trip itinerary app makes visiting New Jerusalem Monastery of Resurrection and other Istra attractions simple, and helps you make a travel plan personal to you.

  • The ceiling of the main part of this church is one of my all time favourite ceilings. The iconostasis is tall and gold.  more »
  • The ceiling inside the main church of this monastery is amazing. You can walk along half the walls that surround the entire property.  more »

  • When building this complex in 17 century, Russian authorities tried to copy Jerusalem church of Holy Sepulchre. You can find here even Aedicula (Kuvuklija, in Russian), a small inner shrine where Christ was buried. But for me the similarity is poor. There is a canteen on the monastery territory with free WC. It's an hour away from Moscow.
  • A very nice, well-kept Monastery. The church was absolutely beautiful inside. We return to see it again. We only had an hour, and it was not enough time to see everything.
