Bridge of Lies, Sibiu

Bridge · Landmark
Bridge of Lies represents the oldest forged-iron bridge in Romania, decorated with rosettes plus floral and geometric motifs. It bears the city's coat of arms on its southern side. Friedrich-Hütte built the bridge in 1859, probably for the circulation of carts. The peculiar name of the bridge--which is the result of the mispronunciation of a German word "Liegenbrücke," meaning "the bridge down"--has inspired several local legends. One story goes that the bridge repeats all the lies uttered by the people crossing it, thus bringing the liars down to earth. • The Bridge of Lies is one of the most iconic places in Sibiu. Located between the Upper Town and the Lower Town, it was first constructed of wood and later of cast iron - it is actually the first iron bridge in Transylvania. Everybody takes photos on the bridge (yes, selfies are very popular), especially during the winter holidays when the bridge is covered with an illuminated arch with hundreds of colorful lights. From the bridge, you have beautiful views of the evangelic church and of the Small Square. Many love locks have appeared on the bridge, some of them were removed by the authorities but new one have started to appear again. If you come there with your significant other, the legend says that you can make a promise to him or her.
  • A beautiful bridge with a great view. It's worth seeing both at night and during the day. During the winter holidays the bridge is beautifully lit with fairy lights, giving a romantic fairytale feeling.
