Piton de Fournaise, Saint-Benoit

One of the world's most active volcanoes at present, Piton de Fournaise sits within a World Heritage-listed national park. At the lower parts of the volcano, accessible from the highway, you can see recently cooled lava flows. To reach the volcano rim you'll have to drive through the forest, first on a highway and then on a bumpy track. From there on, a well-maintained stairway (closed during seismic activity) leads down to the caldera floor. Wear good hiking shoes and layers of clothing since the weather below the rim changes quickly. Don't wander off the marked trails, especially in foggy weather. Confirm accessibility before you go to avoid disappointment. See Piton de Fournaise and all Saint-Benoit has to offer by arranging your trip with our Saint-Benoit tour builder app .

  • It is impossible to come to Reunion without going to the volcano. Breathtaking! In addition you can get there by car, so whatever the age, you can do it

  • Exceptional discovery, leave at night to be at the top for the sunrise and enjoy the calm before the ballet of helicopters that starts at 7:30!! in general the weather is covered very quickly in mid-morning Rando quite sporty, but breathtaking landscape
