Daut Pasha Hamam, Skopje

#8 of 15 in Historic Sites in Skopje
Architectural Building · Hidden Gem · Ruin
In the setting of a 15th-century Turkish bath, today houses the National Art Gallery. Legend has it that the Grand Vizier of the Ottoman Empire, Daut Pasha, built the hammam for his harem. The rectangular building is topped by 13 asymmetrical domes. The largest two domes cover the former dressing rooms, which hold paintings by Macedonian artists from the 14th to the 20th centuries, as well as a collection of modern art and a small collection of icons. Notice the small, star-shaped windows on the inside of the domes. The hammam was turned into an art gallery in 1948 and since then has hosted many exhibits, performances, theatre productions, concerts, and multimedia events. • This is definitely a building that looked older than the rest of the buildings in the city center. The architectural design was unique with the multiple circular domes.  more »
