The Museo de la Música Puertorriqueña is a museum in Ponce, Puerto Rico, that showcases the development of Puerto Rican music, with displays of Taíno, Spanish, and African musical instruments that were played in the romantic danza genre, the favorite music of 19th-century Puerto Rican high society, as well as the more African-inspired bomba and plena styles. Also on display are memorabilia of composers and performers. The Museum traces the rich musical history of Puerto Rico through memorabilia of prominent musicians and displays of the musical instruments associated with the three genres of music that originated in this Caribbean island.Plan your Museum of Puerto Rico Music visit and explore what else you can see and do in Ponce using our Ponce trip itinerary planner.
The building that houses the museum is known as Casa Serrallés and it was the former downtown residence of Juan Eugenio Serrallés and his family, owners of Destilería Serrallés and makers of the Don Q rum.
In 1986, the Ponce Municipal Government purchased the Castillo Serrallés to turn it into the Museum of Puerto Rican Music. However, the idea of turning Castillo Serrallés into a music museum was subsequently discarded.
In 1991 the first headquarters of the Museo de la Musica Puertorriqueña were located at 70 Cristina Street in what is now the Centro Cultural de Ponce. The pastel villa building was built by a well known architect named Juan Bertoli Calderoni, who also built many other buildings throughout Puerto Rico. It was designed in the neo-classic architectural style, specifically a French style architecture.

This was a small gem in the center of town. Great museum that deals with the music of Puerto Rico especially from the city of Ponce. more »
As a musician I was really excited to visit this museum in Ponce and was completely crushed when we arrived and it was closed for unknown reasons. The guard at the back shooed us away and shouted... more »
28 June 2018 1. Due to budget constraints from the recovery effort of Maria there are currently only 2 official tour guides in the town of Poncé to cover their four museums. This means that 2-3 of them are closed most of the days to save on operating costs. 2. If you want to visit any of the museums in Poncé it would be wise to call ahead and setup a time and day so you can be sure that their is a guide available to let you in, show you around and give you a good tour. Also, there isn’t any A/c so be sure to wear cool clothing and bring a rag or fan to help you stay cool in the summer months. 3. The Music Museum in Poncé is terrific and, if you are fortunate enough to land Mr. Rodriguez as your guide, you will be truly edifies by the boys of knowledge he will share with you. 4. Be certain to stay to the end of the tour where you will get to see (IMO) the finest collection of PR Quatros assembled in one room by the foremost artist and PR craftsman Carmelo Martéll. 5. If you can, ask to see the courtyard. It is amazing and they would like to start utilizing it fore music events and play productions. -Don’t walk through the ground brush though, it has tons of sticky burs. However, you may find a mango or passion fruit if yer lucky. We considered this the “gift shop”.
This museum is one of the victims of the local economic crisis and budget cuts. Great content on all musical rhythms Ponce and Puerto Rico has brought to the world. But not enough budget for good guides, AC or to keep things running well. It is also normally close. Still would recommend to visit the place due to its historic and cultural content.
