Castelo dos Mouros, Sintra

4.5
A symbol of Islamic presence in the area, the medieval Castelo dos Mouros has served as protection for several groups throughout history. Visiting this World Heritage Site atop a mountainous cliff, you'll have great views of Sintra. This castle was built in the eighth or ninth century to defend the agricultural region and its people. In 1147, the castle surrendered to Christian forces after the conquest of Lisbon. The castle was used as a watchtower and military fortification, and was restored by Ferdinand II based on the Romantic style popular at the time. You can tour this irregular structure, which features a double belt of walls, internal cistern, and royal tower. • Definitely visit if you are going to Pena Palace- do Pena first to avoid the long lines, then take the short walk back to this castle. There was no wait and not too many people around even thought it ...  more »
  • Climbing a little hard, but it's worth it, the scenery is beautiful, you can look out over the whole small house, the castle is also very special, this pat on the palate is also beautiful.

  • Seems a good example of the age - the time of the Moorish kings when they ruled Portugal. The hills of Sintra were a good location for a lookout-castle north of Lisbon. Spend an hour climbing the hills! There are exhibits of the ancient people that were here before the Moors ruled, as well. The castle here is an older version of the castles that dot Portugal. The towers are not as big, but impressive nevertheless.
  • A fortress with climbing and stairs, extremely windy and the observation towers give you the reward you deserve with spectacular views, breathtaking walk before you finally get to the castle. Go to every tower on opposite ends to view everything way down there, were the commons live, were the enemy will dream about getting to the top. Really worth it.
