Tour the ancient Sao Vicente Caves, which boast some of Portugal's first caves to be open to the public. These caves were discovered in 1885 but didn't open for public use until 1996. This natural, rugged site was formed by a volcanic eruption about 890,000 years ago. Follow the 1,000 m (3,281 ft) underground route, and emerge from your tour at the Volcano Center. Here you can learn even more about the island, its history, and the caves through carefully crafted audiovisual displays.     Was there in August 2019. Although well advertised, to me they were a disappointment. Volcanic air vents. Cement floor and they go in to the mountain a fair bit. Bit of a damp squid. Staff gave the...  more »

    Very nice caves to go inside and feel the chill during hot, sunny day. Walk through the cave lasts 30min and next 30min are the presentations and 3D movie about the island. Good value for the price!

    Definitely worth to visit. Architect made an excellent game with glass and water. The following movies exhibition is interesting. One of document in 3D. The great guide Fatima ads value to the excursion.
