Caldeira das Sete Cidades, Sao Miguel

Caldeira das Sete Cidades, an important source of fresh water for the islands, provides a subtropical oasis of green hills, dense forests, and foggy bluffs. Formed by a prehistoric volcanic eruption followed by another in 1445, the area is actually a large volcanic crater. The resulting land offers an array of flora and fauna. Take one of the trails that will lead you up to the top of the crater, where you'll observe numerous lakes, the ocean, and the quaint town within.   • View of the king, stunning in view of the green and blue lagoons, nature at its best.... The descent to the village was fantastic, with hydrangeas of various colors open to the road.

  • Truly stunning to see. Would highly recommend going into the village as well as hiking the rim so you can see it from both perspectives!  more »
  • A beautiful, actually two beautiful lakes situated in the crater of a dormant volcano. The view from the top side is amazing, especially from the top of the abandoned hotel located on the southern part. Walking down close to the lakes is very nice too as there are some picnic areas and ducks swimming peacefully by. Unfortunately the weather wasn't the best but it was amazing nonetheless.html#
