Trip Planner: Europe / Portugal / Central Portugal / Lisbon District / Lisbon / Santo Antonio de Lisboa
One of the city's major landmarks, Santo Antonio de Lisboa features an easily recognizable front facade blending elements of both Baroque and Neoclassical architectural styles. According to local legend, the church marks the birthplace of St. Anthony, revered as a matchmaker and protector of young brides. Designed by architect Mateus Vicente de Oliveira and completed in the 1760s, the church notably includes a large altarpiece depicting a scene in which the saint holds baby Jesus in his arms. The square in front of the church features a statue of St. Anthony dedicated by Pope John Paul II in 1982.
