Trip Planner: Europe / Portugal / Central Portugal / Lisbon District / Lisbon / Palácio Nacional da Ajuda
Started as a luxurious home in 1795 for the Portuguese royal family, Palácio Nacional da Ajuda was never totally completed. The royal family's flight to Brazil following Napoleon's invasion brought the complex's construction to a halt. Visit the ornate palace for a glimpse into the lives of some of the world's wealthiest people of that time. You'll see countless tapestries, paintings, intricate statues, decorative furniture, and expensive items from around the world, all parts of the site's extensive collection of items spanning more than 500 years. Be sure to make your way to the throne room, perhaps the crowning glory of the complex, for a view of its frescoes and chandeliers. Palácio Nacional da Ajuda reviews
The grand dining hall is worth the 5 euro price of admission by itself. Immaculate. The adjacent neighborhood is also quite unique and a great walk. more »
Beautiful palace situated in Lisbon. We visited as part of a private tour and I would recommend having a tour guide walk to explain the palace's history and each unique room. Each room is unique and..... more »
Fantastic former home of the former Portuguese royal family. Wonderful Neoclassical building with great classical, renaissance and asian collections. It a bit of a pain to get to, but reasonably prices as the palace is surprisingly small. The highlights are the Grand Waiting Room and the Audience room with it's grand tapestries, the The Marble Room with it's animal menagerie of sculptures, and of course the throne room. Definitely worth a visit in Lisbon.
Such an amazing palace. Very informative boards at each room to inform of the purposes of the room with mentions of special furniture or items within each room. There is a reasonable entry fee... well worth the visit. We did the hop-on-hop-off boat tour and then ubered to the palace. So much to see... so many photos... so impressive.
