Narrating the rich history of Portugal's maritime achievements, Museu de Marinha boasts a collection of more than 17,000 nautical items. Housed inside the west wing of a Neo-Manueline monastery, the museum's exhibits evoke the country's domination of the seas during the so-called Age of Discoveries. Highlights include seaplanes, firefighting machines, reconstructions of royal barges, and 17th century globes depicting the world before the European discovery of Australia. Pay special attention to the museum's oldest exhibit: a wooden figure of Archangel Raphael that accompanied explorer Vasco da Gama on his famed voyage to India. Museu de Marinha Reviews
My family very much enjoyed this museum - there was a lot to see. It's slightly old-fashioned but the exhibits are fascinating. more »
Des premières traversées à la marine portugaise d'aujourd'hui, le musées regorge de maquettes, costumes, vidéos et bateau. Nous l'avons visité le matin. Il y avait très peu de monde. A good size to spend an hour or two at. Longer is not needed. Get a sense of history walking about and the grounds and church are great architecture which has stood the test of time. Can get busy but still enjoyable and good photo opportunities in the grounds.
Beautiful place to know the history of Portugal through their maritime adventures. The building is very spacious and has plenty of different ship models. It does not have many places to sit though.
