Get a feel for feudal Portugal at the 10th century Guimaraes Castle. Originally constructed by the Countess of Portugal, Mumadona Dias, to protect the area from invading Moors and Normans, the castle has long been associated with the roots of the Portuguese nation. D. Afonso Henriques, the founder and first King of Portugal, was born here in 1111. Walk within the square keep of the castle and around the central tower. Entrance is free, but much of the castle is barricaded and cannot be entered. In the courtyard you'll find local falconers who keep falcons and owls and will allow them to perch on your arm for a small fee. Unfortunately we only saw it from the outside.
An impressive look from outside and inside. Beautiful view of the town and the castle grounds. However, the history of the castle is not detailed and the exhibit are not very interesting ( a signed football t-shirt is not very appropriate ), it focuses on a few historical events of the town. I recommend buying a double ticket with visit of this castle and the duke's, affordable and educative.
Good view from battlements. Small museum was a little heavy going (lots of info) Main view from Tower was closed for our visit. Good value for small entry fee. One of the oldest castles in Europe.
