Depending on the weather conditions, from Pico do Arieiro you can either see endless chasms cutting through red and green colored hills or a soft carpet of white clouds rolling beneath your feet. With a height of 1,818 m (5,965 ft), the peak is the highest spot on Madeira. Even though it requires hiking and climbing long trails, 1,000 people on average visit the site every day. Dress comfortably, take water with you, and let the well-built stone pathway lead you through forests and tunnels to the top. It's very well signposted. Watch out for the timetable as the access road closes-at 7 p.m. APXOX in summer.
Couldn’t believe the views / area. We ended up going back and doing the full hike to Pico Ruivo, however highly recommend even if just going to the first lookout (15 mins there). more »
Mind blowing and breathtaking location in Madeira. Careful, it is cold out there. But what a view.
Mind blowing views. Can see the horizon on all sides and drive all the way to the peak with only a few steps to the summit from the car. People seem to put rocks under cars to stop them from rolling down the hill, which seems quite smart. There is cafe at the top that provides a welcome respite before the trip back down.
