The beautiful Monte Palace Madeira surrounds a palace built by Alfredo Guilherme Rodrigues when he acquired the property in 1897. The garden aspect was established 100 years later in 1987 and features exotic plants as well as native ones, primarily from the Madeira forest. Travel along pathways past lakes with koi fish. View artworks integrated into the landscape, such as the garden's ceramic tile collection from the 15th century. A museum houses an exhibit of contemporary Zimbabwean sculpture and a collection of minerals and gems from around the world. And the palace (not to be visited) with a pond and very nice surroundings and cared for. Many plants and flowers... Note that the entrance is different from the botanical garden and is not cheap (12.50 euros). You can climb by cable car from the Boránico or direct from Funchal next to the old quarter (Santa Maria Street).
Visit the palace while in the garden, not much to see a little run down, not open to the public. Disappointed more »
An excellent experience. The gardens are stunning throughout. The paths are well maintained and we'll signed. The exhibition of African art was fascinating. The staff at the entrance were very helpful as were those in the cafe. I would go again.
Amazing tropical gardens set high up the mountain with fabulous views of Madeira's spectacular coastline. Can be reached by cable car, bus or taxi. The botanical gardens are also well worth a visit - just another short cable car ride away. The stunning and imposing Church is very much the centre point of Monte , open and welcoming. Hurtling down a very steep cobblestone street in a basket pushed by two young men dressed in white suits and straw boaters is an experience not to be missed! Well worth a visit
