Fountain Giraldo Square, Evora

#5 of 136 in Things to do in Evora
Landmark · Tourist Spot
Largely responsible for Evora's designation as a World Heritage Site, the medieval Fountain Giraldo Square remains the city's social center. Once the setting for some of the region's most violent historical events, the spacious square witnessed thousands of gruesome executions during the Spanish Inquisition. Today, this lively public space attracts tourists with its alfresco cafes and restaurants, which serve regional specialties in a relaxed, urban atmosphere. Surrounding the elegant plaza you can see some of the country's finest examples of Gothic and Romanesque architecture, including a cathedral where explorer Vasco de Gama had the flags of his ships blessed before setting off on his famous trip to India. Fountain Giraldo Square is just one of the many highlights you can arrange to see using our , world travel planner Edition.
