Trip Planner: Europe / Portugal / Central Portugal / Coimbra District / Coimbra / Old Cathedral of Coimbra (Se Velha de Coimbra)
Considered one of the most important Romanesque Roman Catholic structures in the country, Old Cathedral of Coimbra (Se Velha de Coimbra) is also one of Portugal's best-preserved cathedrals. While other structures had to be greatly remodeled or renovated over time, especially after the Great Earthquake of 1755, this church has remained relatively intact. The original medieval structure was very basic and built in the 13th century. The Romanesque style for which it is now famous was designed later by architect Master Robert. Peruse the facades of this cathedral, including the Renaissance-style portal that was added in the 16th century, before exploring its interior. Take in hundreds of years of history while walking through this architectural and artistic site. The Nave and the main Altar (Gothic), the tiles, the carved capitals, the baptistic sinks and the Special Door (Renaissance) on the north façade, are some of the most interesting aspects to contemplate in this visit. Not to lose!
This place is worth a visit. Best done walking from the university.
Magical place. Full of old stuff. There is some bishops buried there, funny if you think how many people may died there. There is also an old tree in the backyard. Bottomline: if you like old stuff, that is your place.
