  • Neat statue of the man in question.
  • The statue of Don Juan III who presides over the Patio de las Escuelas of the University of Coimbra is the work of the sculptor Francisco Franco (1855-1955), one of the most prominent official artists of the regime of the dictator Oliveira Salazar. The work of 1948 is a good example of The Austere Classicism of Franco, who in this case was inspired by Hans Holbein's portraits of Henry VIII of England. The sculpture is part of the program developed in the Upper Coimbra that began in the 40s of the twentieth century and that meant the complete destruction of the area to dedicate it to university facilities. In the remodeling were respected the historic buildings that surround the Patio, which receives this statue in honor of the monarch who, in 1537, definitively fixed in Coimbra the Portuguese university, until then shared with Lisbon.
