  • The church we know today is the result of several interventions in the primitive temple, which had its beginning of construction in the last decade of the 16TH century, more concretely in 1595, the year of the founding of the Brotherhood of Mercy of Arcos de Valdevez. It was essentially in the EIGHTEENTH century that this temple had the greatest remodeling, with the ruin of the sacristy that was the reason enough for a new façade as well. Thought, designed in 1710 and only concreted in 1733, the frontispiece of the church had its new image absorbing the Baroque language of the height, thus not suffering any modification so far, happening the same with the annex of the House of the consistory, in the same Alignment but slightly more inrecoiled. This intervention enabled the opening of the broad niche on the central portal, of Our Lady of the door. The façade bounded by double pilasters is crowned by pinnacles in the Cunhais and, at the center of it, two identical and overlapping tears corresponding to the portal and the niche of Our Lady of the door, both flanked by pilasters to which the entablamus overlaps. They differ in the span, in which the portal is in straight Verga and the niche corresponds to a perfect back arch. Finally, it is superimposed by a pair of volutes framing the actual weapons. Two quadrilled spectacles and two straight verga windows with curved gables flank the portal and niche respectively. The interior of a single nave has a ceiling painted with the representations, the center, the visitation and the Assumption of the Virgin, a high choir that inside it includes the organ, pulpits and altarpieces where the purification and decoration prevines, being two lateral and two side angles. The triumphal arch, with paintings, makes the separation of the nave with the chancel, with the ceiling painted in stuque, and is illuminated with four side windows in a straight Verga frame, in which the valances are in gilt, and ashlar of standard polychrome tiles. The ensemble, the Church, the House of the consistory and the cruise, are the three pieces that are classified as property of public interest.
