Holy Cross Church (Kosciol Swietego Krzyza), Warsaw

4.5
The Church of the Holy Cross is a Roman Catholic house of worship in Warsaw, Poland. Located on Krakowskie Przedmieście opposite the main Warsaw University campus, it is one of the most notable Baroque churches in Poland's capital. The Holy Cross Church is currently administered by the Missionary Friars of Vincent de Paul.HistoryAs early as the 15th century, a small wooden chapel of the Holy Cross had been erected here. In 1526 the chapel was demolished, and a newer church was erected. Refurbished and extended by Paweł Zembrzuski in 1615, the church was too small to fill the needs of the growing city. Initially located well outside the city limits, by the 17th century it had become one of the main churches in the southern suburb (przedmieście) of the city that had in 1596 become Poland's capital. In 1653 Queen Marie Louise Gonzaga gave the church to the French order of Missionary Friars of Vincent de Paul. However, three years later Warsaw was captured by Swedish armies during the Deluge. Pillaged, the church was found to be damaged beyond repair. During the reign of King John III Sobieski the church's remnants were demolished, and it was decided to erect a new shrine. In the 18th century this became the origin of the gorzkie żale tradition.

  • Obviously being on the royal road can not be seen, although it has an elevated entrance compared to the road side... very common thing here... and usually when a beautiful statue happens it looks out from the landing in front of the entrance... Christ with the cross is beautiful... and the perspective from here on -- especially at sunset -- is breathtaking. The interior of the church is of little importance... a classic baroque well reconstructed after the Nazi destruction... a bit fetishistic the presence of Chopin's heart (not even a relic of a saint). You will pass in front of it and it is worth at least climbing the steps. Useful advice? Then click on "Useful" or "Thank You, roberto4u68" and look at all the Warsaw reviews I've done.

  • Beautiful church. Also remember that there is our national treasure, namely the heart of Fryderyk Chopin

  • Awesome building, but you should be respectful with the prayers. The most remarkable fact of the church is that you can find Chopin's heart. Although the heart is not visible per se, there is a plaque in one of the columns at the left of the altar that shows the place where it rests.
  • Beautiful interior and we'll maintained. Main attraction here is to view the column where the heart of Chopin is kept upon his death and his wish to come back to Poland.
