Białowieża National Park is a National Park in Podlaskie Voivodeship, in Eastern Poland adjacent with the border with Belarus. The total area of the park is 152.2km2. It is located 62km southeast of Białystok . It is known for the protection of the best preserved part of the Białowieża Forest, Europe's last temperate primaeval forest fragment that once stretched across the European Plain. It is home to the world's largest population of European bison, the continent's heaviest land animals. The border between the two countries runs through the forest, the Belovezhskaya Pushcha National Park is adjacent on the Belarus side of the border. There is a border crossing for hikers and cyclists within the forest.
The park's formal beginning was the Forest Reserve inspectorate established in 1921. The inspectorate was transformed into the National Park in Białowieża on 11 August 1932 by the Second Polish Republic. After World War II, the forest was divided between the People's Republic of Poland and the Belarusian SSR of the Soviet Union. The People's Republic of Poland reopened the Białowieża National Park in 1947.

  • Amazing wilderness. There are two must dos: 1. Book a guided tour in the strict reserve 2. Rent bikes and fix special visa to experience the Belarusian part of the reserve. Guided tours and special visa can be fixed in the PTTK information. Special visa needs to be fixed at least 1 day in advance.
  • Information given by the staff was neither helpful nor happily given, the cheapest option for a tour guide for two people was 380 zloty and there was no other option given. We weren't allowed to take a photo of the map so we would know where we were going on the free route which made it hard to follow the staff's instructions. The national park itself looked lovely from the distance we saw it from, seeing as we got lost due to staff poor instructions.
