Cagsawa Ruins Park, Legazpi

The building remains at Cagsawa Ruins Park provide a ghostly reminder of a town destroyed by a violent volcanic eruption. Centered primarily on a 16th-century Franciscan church, the ruins consist of a burnt-out stone belfry and surrounding foundations. Explore the site to get a sense of how the area looked before the eruption of nearby Mount Mayon, which obliterated the town in 1814. Make your way up to the ruined bell tower, covered in jungle growth, and peek inside--townsfolk sheltered here during the eruption. Don't miss the small plaque on the outside of the structure detailing more of the church's earlier history. • The ruins are beautiful and it is nice to see the old walls and to be able to walk around freely in between what is left, what isn't too much. The only "negative" thing is how crowded the place is and how many souvenir shops are inside the area of the ruins and in front of it. On the plus side you can get some nice souvenirs for a price that seems to be fair ;)
  • This park has been renovated to cater the tourists. It has come a long way compared to the pictures we had in the early 90s. The place was deserted, no specialty shop shacks or ATV adventure trails were there. Now, you just have to take your pick to enjoy the view and the tours they offered.
