Catarata de Gocta, Valera

4.9
#1 of 11 in Parks in Amazonas Region
Unchartered territory until 2005, Catarata de Gocta got its name on the map--literally and figuratively--following an expedition led by German Stefan Ziemendorff. The perennial waterfall cascades over two drops, with a total measured height of 771 m (2,530 ft), making the waterfall the third tallest free-leaping waterfall in the world. To experience the falls up close, you'll have to hike; the trail is about 6 km (3.7 mi) in length. Be sure to wear proper hiking shoes, as the trail can be slippery at times, and don't forget waterproof clothing to protect against the spray off the falls as you get close to its base.
